Rocky Mount Telegram: School workers set United Way donation record
Nash-Rocky Mount Public School District was honored by the United Way Tar River Region at the Jan. 9 meeting of the Board of Education. United Way Executive Director Ginny Mohrbutter and Jim Gray, president of N.C. Wesleyan College and the 2011-12 volunteer Campaign Chairman for United Way, praised Nash-Rocky Mount Public School System employees for their exemplary support of United Way and the 41 health and human services programs it represents.

WWAY: Mentorship program changes young lives "Outside the Walls"
There are many at-risk youth in the Port City, and studies show that having a positive role model or mentor can significantly decrease a child's potential to get into negative things. WNCT: Grants for area shelter to bring renovations, free vaccinations
A local animal shelter will be seeing some changes over the next few months and that's good news for all animal lovers.The Pitt County Animal Shelter recently received $10,000 in grant money from the ASPCA.

WCNC: Homeless shelters get help during freezing temperatures
With below freezing temperatures outside this week, Charlotte-area shelters are busier than normal. The two men’s shelters are housing more than 600 men combined, slightly more than normal, in their busiest year yet.

Charlotte Observer: Grant rewards research, helps homeowners
UNC Charlotte recently became the first academic institution to receive a grant through a new U.S. Department of Energy program aimed at more efficiently weatherizing the homes of low-income Americans. The $2 million grant was awarded to Thomas Gentry, assistant professor of architecture at UNCC, and Robert Cox, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering.

Watauga Democrat: NC receives $338 million to help homeowners
Hundreds of homeowners in the High Country may be eligible for restitution payments, mortgage refinancing, principal reduction and other assistance as a result of a $25 billion settlement with five of the nation's largest banks. N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper and other state attorneys general on Feb. 9 announced an agreement with the nation's five largest mortgage servicers.
