North Carolina AmeriCorps programs

The N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service currently administers ten (10) AmeriCorps programs throughout the state.

Please note that the list below only includes the eleven AmeriCorps programs in North Carolina administered by the Commission; it does not include a list of North Carolina's AmeriCorps VISTA programs or National Directs. Summary: 74 half-time Members tutor at-risk students in grades 3-8 using the Great Leaps and Comprehension Strategies reading programs. 85 minimum time Members tutor at-risk 9th graders using the same reading programs. An additional 10 half-time Members tutor and mentor underachieving 9th and 10th grade students in the AVID Program focusing on reading in the content area, vocabulary development, enhancement of writing skills, and higher order thinking skills.

Summary: 18 full-time Members and 25 mimimum-time Members serve as assistant pre-school teachers, enhancing the quality of childcare by providing enrichment activities to the children, and release time for teachers so they can further their education in early childhood. Member Development includes NC Early Childhood Credentials 1 & 2 and a college level course in early childhood or childcare.

Summary: 55 full-time Members serve as crew leaders, training community volunteers and partner families in the construction of affordable homes. Members will serve as volunteer service assistants in the recruitment, management and recognition of community volunteers. One Member will serve as AmeriCorps Team Leader, assisting in the development of all team building and training for the members.

Summary: 25 half-time Members provide in-school and after-school one-to-one tutoring using the Great Leaps curricula for students "at risk" of academic failure. Members maintain a strong presence in the community by participating in service projects and collaborating with many other community agencies that serve children.

Summary: All (19 full-time and 10 full-time Professional Corps Members) tutor students identified as reading below grade level. 20 full-time Members mentor two middle or high school youth in one hour weekly sessions designed to improve attitudes toward school. 10 full-time Members facilitate service learning and conflict resolution projects for students and 9 full-time Members recruit, train and manage volunteers to tutor/mentor additional youth the Asheville area. One full-time Member serves as the AmeriCorps Team Leader.

Summary: 20 full-time, 9 half-time, and 10 minimum time Members serve academically "at risk" students at a charter school in Kinston. Members tutor students during the school day in reading and math using the NC Reading and Math Curriculum. In the after school program they provide enrichment activities, homework assistance and teach positive school preparedness habits.

Summary: Members teach preschool children and provide educational release time for child care providers in an effort to improve/maintain 4 or 5 star rated license status. The program will provide the T.E.A.C.H Early Childhood® Credential Scholarship resulting in all members earning their NC Early Childhood Credential.

Summary: 15 full-time AmeriCorps Promise Fellows recruit volunteers to become mentors for court referred youth with the Governor's One-on-One program and the Support Our Students program (SOS). Fellows also develop activities for youth served that meet the five America's Promises: A caring adult; a safe place to learn and grow; a healthy start; an opportunity to give back to community; and a marketable skill.

Summary: 26 full-time, 24 half-time, 15 minimum time, and 15 Professional Corps Members provide interpretation and translation services to immigrants and refugees. Member Development includes certification as Interpreters for bi-lingual Members. All members receive an opportunity to earn a credential in cross-cultural human services through the UNCG Department of Social Work.

Summary: All members (11 half-time, 18 full-time) serve as tutors to increase reading and English language abilities, and develop improved attitudes and behaviors toward learning among students at academic risk. 13 half-time Members also serve to build the capacity of campus based tutoring programs around the state to provide quality tutoring services
