Governor's Page Program

What is the Governor's Page Program?
The Governor's Page Program, a year round
program established in 1973, provides an opportunity for high school
students to spend a week in Raleigh and learn of the roles and functions
of state government. Each week, Pages will be assigned to a cabinet
level agency or Council of State office within the state government
complex to assist employees with various tasks. In addition to their
daily responsibilities, Pages will have the opportunity to attend
press conferences, tour several historic landmarks including the State
Capitol, the Legislative Building, the Executive Mansion, the Supreme
Court and the NC Correctional Institute for Women; participate in
service projects; and meet Governor Easley.
Why be a Page?
Perhaps the best reasons to be a Page come from students who
have served as Pages themselves:
" This past semester in school I took Civics and Economics,
a course mainly about state and federal government. I think I learned
more about state government this week than I did that entire semester."
F. O'Hale, Smithfield, NC
"I got to
visit many beautiful and historical places, such as the State Capitol
and the Governor's Mansion."
A. Patel, Cary, NC
"Instead of Raleigh being a large
city with thousands of separate lives, I now think of the capital city
as a working community of the nation and world."
H. Gula, Charlotte, NC
"I will always remember the experience
from the women's prison, watching the Governor sign a bill into a law,
and meeting other wonderful pages from all over the state."
M. Browning, Raleigh, NC
"Meeting the Governor was an honor
and a pleasure - a day I will always remember."
J. Locklear, Pembroke, NC
"Going to Urban Ministries gave
me the wonderful feeling knowing that I was helping others I had never
met."
B. Tuggle, Durham, NC
"I got a chance to interview two
women in careers I am interested in and it was inspiring to hear what
they do and get advice on how I can achieve my goals."
K. Allen, Hampstead, NC
"Working at Urban Ministries made
me want to help the community more when I return home."
K. Birdsong, Huntersville, NC
"The Page Program really brings
our civics and economics books and classes to life, allowing for a better
understanding."
T. Keith, Raleigh, NC
" The many experiences that I
have received while serving as a Page will contribute to the way I view
politics, science, history and people."
C. Walkins, Boomer, NC
"The Page Program provided a window
for me to catch a glimpse of how state government operates."
E. Joyner, Knightdale, NC
"During my week I was able to assist the State of NC, meet
the Governor, tour Raleigh's downtown museums, meet my representative
and senator, as well as meet some great fellow Pages."
A. Cassil, State Road, NC
